Math

I used to hate math with a passion. When I started elementary Mom had to hold off teaching me math for 2 years because I had such a mind block towards it. I would not learn it. It was hard. It didnt make sense. It was beyond frustrating. I remember evenings when my dad, exhausted from working 12 hour shifts, would take time to sit down and work with me. Trying to teach me through my stubbornness addition, subtraction and the concept of fractions etc. Those evenings were so very very frustrating. Looking back it seems I did more crying than learning. My dear Father was so patient with me.
By the time I got to highschool I had progressed to tolerating math. Until I met Algebra. Oh how trying that subject was for me. When summer came along and I was not even a third done with freshman math my parents took pity on me and got me a math tutor - Mr. W and then later on Ms. P. These two wonderful people were so very patient with me and slowly, v-e-r-y slowly, it all started to click. I began to dislike math less and less and actually began to enjoy it.
That was 4 years ago. Today I found my self spending several hours practicing pediatric dosage calculations (above picture) for a quiz tomorrow and to my surprise found that I was actually enjoying it very much. Granted, it isnt algebra but it is still a challenge for me.
Math in nursing isnt complicated but it does take practice. Precision is the most important aspect because one simple mistake in calculations can cause serious consequences. Pressure? No, not really. God is faithful :)

  1. Been there, done that...I always used to be soo frustrated over math, too. I used to give my mom a hard time especially during my high school years (geometry? trigonometry? no way!) Anyhow, God is good and practice makes perfect...;) I found I started enjoying it, too, once I got what it meant. So I'm glad to hear that you can find more than frustration in it, too!! yay! You're going to be such a good nurse... :)
